Young people participated in the introduction to fishing activity. Prior to the activity the enthusiasm from the group was very limited and none of the young people had participated in fishing before. They were also a number of young people that had reservations and even fears about the idea of handling a fish and even touching a maggot. The instructors engaged the group very positively and broke down the instructions in very simple steps to ensure that all young people understood and felt comfortable to ask questions. Not only did young people learn to follow the technical aspects of fishing but also managed to overcome fears. The instructors again broke the fear aspects down into small steps, they demonstrated how both the fish and maggots posed no threat and encouraged the young people to overcome a challenge at a time. Towards the end of the session young people were demonstrating their new skills and overcome fears by undertaking the entire fishing process which included hooking and throwing maggots, removing their caught fish, and even posing for a photo with the fish. The delivery of the session was of a very high standard and the group of young people experienced a day of fun, learning, and achievement. The instructors of Access Angling were very engaging with the young people and managed to combine learning with having fun in an excellent way. Young people have since asked about the possibility of engaging in future sessions and are keen to try out other ways in which they can experience fishing.
